Demostrative Pronoun

Is this grammatically wrong?

Ex)I like the shape of the Samsung phone more than this of iPhone.

For what reasons shoud 'that' be used instead of that?

Also, I have difficulty understanding the sentence below, not the meaning, but the exact usage of this and that to to avoid some kind of redundancy.

There is an apple. This is red.

In this case, does 'this' indicate apple?
