demo?

Is demo short for demolish or demolition? Is it a common usage?

Thanks,

____

Note:

I had a conversation with an American fellow. He kept using the word 'demo' referring to the structral changes of a building.

'Demo' is usually short for demonstration, isn't it? Does 'demo' pronounce the same in two different usages mentioned here?

  • Most common usage is at an auto dealership where they have a demo at a discounted price.
  • In this sense a demo is short for demonstration model, where the sales person took a brand new car and drove around.
  • So it is not a used model, but probably has a few thousand miles on it.

Hi,

I've never heard 'demo' used for anything except a demonstration.

But perhaps people in the demolition business might use it as part of their particular jargon.

Best wishes, Clive

For what it's worth, I've seen it used as short for French "démonstration", which shows how things work. I guess it must be "Frenglish Internet" language

In the construction trades the term "demo" or "demoed" is jargon for demolish or demolition. It us not a shortened form of demonstration. In construction the word for demonstration would be "model" or "mock up".
