Vocabulary

deltaplane = hang-glider

Hi,
(1) Do English speakers ever use "deltaplane" for "hang-glider"?

(2) If you hear "a delta plane", you will probably think of a Delta Airlines plane first? Is my guess correct?

Thank you

Deltaplane is the French word for hang gliding and the hang glider itself, a trade name. I've never seen it in English, not that I would, being of a rather non-risk-taking bent these days. Still, I doubt that many English speakers would know what you meant. If I heard you say "a delta plane", I'd think you meant delta-winged, like a MiG-21 or a Mirage.

In the US the terms "deltaplane" and "deltawing" are not used in the sense of "hang-glider." "Hang-gliding" seems to have greatly diminished in popularity. I would go so far as to say no one does it anymore. Other types of gliding sports - like paragliding, parasailing, ciffjumping, cliffflying, and wingsuitflying - have eclipsed it.
