Delivering oneself into

Hello,
This is about four Americans during World War II in Germany, and how they were trying hide from Germans.

"Avoiding Germans, they were delivering themselves into rural silences ever more profound."

What does "to deliver oneself into smth" mean?

I couldn't find anything on the net or in the vocabulary I have.

Thank you in advance:)

It's not much different from delivering the mail. You can deliver a person to the authorities. You can take them physically, or you can betray them by giving information which allows the authorities to capture them.
