Deliverance country

Question

While we were putting up the tent and making dinner every car that went past slowed down to 10kms and starred at us. Rose was getting a bit unnerved by it; it almost felt like deliverance country. Then a guy drove over to where we were camped, gets out of his car and asks "Are there any more of yous?" about then we noticed the gun on his passenger seat. It turned out he was going hunting and was just checking we didn't have any friends wandering round in the bush. After dinner it was dark so we went to bed for the night.

Could you please explain to me what "deliverance country" means here?

Though I know "country" is a nation.

'Deliverance' is a 1972 movie about 4 city folks who go on a fishing trip in the countryside and are terrorized by some local crazies.  It is an eerie, frightening movie.

My guess is that it's a reference to the film "Deliverance" in which a group of city-dwellers venture into the great outdoors and are tormented by local hicks (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deliverance ). "country" here means a tract of land with a certain characteristic, not a nation.

(If this explanation is correct then the author hasn't exactly helped the reader by neither capitalising "Deliverance" nor putting it in quotes or italics.)

it almost felt as if we were in a place like the place portrayed in the movie Deliverance.

To translate that further requires a knowledge of the movie, of course. In short,

We felt uneasy, almost threatened -- in some indefinable way.
