I dunno - is this Back to the Future or that Butterfly Effect flick? Or maybe Peggy Sue Got Married? Need a genre. Plus there's the twins thing, not too sure about that. But if you have a good twist on it - maybe it's action/ adventure? - Die Hard with romance - I'd pay to see it.

Or if he goes back further in time to kill his newer self and then save the girl, but it all loops back again, as the newer new self wins the girl and the original is again left alone and jealous as he re-plots his own murder/suicide.
Oh wait a minute, that's the sequel... "Deja Vu All Over Again."

But didn't she fall in love with his "former self" to begin with?

I mean isn't that why she's his (late) girl friend in the first place because they fell in love in the past?
If that never happened, then they wouldn't have been boy friend and girl friend thus she would simply have been some stranger, or some girl in his past with whom he'd had some minor flirtation and the fact that she died would have been irrelevant to him just someone he knew slightly from his past who died, and why bother to go back into the past to try to save her?
Maybe the way it works is that he has to somehow "pretend" to be his older self in order to divert something that happened from happening that tragic night when they were going to elope that led to her death.
But it's a really tricky situation, because you can't mess with the time line so however he alters things, he has to do it without the earlier "him" knowing that anything has changed. He has to leave the past as *he* remembers it, exactly as it was, with him believing that his girlfriend died tragically, and he's to blame but somehow he's actually altered things so that the girl friend lives and is somehow spirited away.
That way, he can think back, remember the past - and everything is the same. Nothing has changed. The past, as he recalls it, is completely unaltered. Yet the girl friend he remembers as dying in fact, actually always survived.

I'm not talking about reality I'm talking about the world of "Deja Vu" (the movie) where if...

the Denzel Washington who went back in time hadn't gotten killed there would have, apparently, been two Denzel Washingtons walking around. And, though the logline didn't say it right, Denzel Washington didn't fall in love with his girlfriend until after she was dead when he got to see here alive in his time contraption thingie.
And, no, it doesn't make sense. But these time traveling movies never do if you actually try to think them out. What happened, couldn't have happened unless you went back in time, but you wouldn't go back in time unless what happened happened. It seems to me that you actually end up with an endless loop.

Yeah, but they've been having trouble because the "former self" isn't adventurous enough. The new self, since he has to save her life, has to be adventurous, hence she falls head over hills over that version of him.

(Or whatever.)

I don't hate time travel movies because I don't try to think them out too much. (I just try to go along with the premise.) The minute you apply logic to them, you're pretty much screwed. Sometimes, though, if it's too stupid, I can't shut the *** alarm off in my head long enough to watch the movie. Sounds like "Time Crimes" is one of those movies (I haven't seen it).
