Deflecting gossip meaning?

Hi,

What is the meaning of deflecting gossip in the following text?

Later that afternoon, during an early cocktail hour, he held court again, answering more questions, deflecting more gossips.

Could it possibly mean to expel gossips?

Thanks

If you check the original text in the novel, you'll find that Grisham wrote 'gossip', not 'gossips'. Please double check what you type, before you post it here! deflecting more gossip means cleverly avoiding conversation that just consisted of more gossip.
