Definition of fountain

Hi

Macmillan English Dictionary defines the word fountain like this:

A structure through which a stream of water is pumped into the air and falls down again.

The use of the underlined part did not strike me as correct. I mean, the jump from passive to active is too quick: pumped into vs falls down

May I know your  opinion?

Thanks,

Tom

I wouldn't say it is wrong, but I agree it sounds awkward. What would you say instead?

Perhaps:

A structure through which a stream of water is pumped into the air and then allowed to fall down again.

Does it work at all?

Hmm. That thought never occurred to me. It sounded all right to me. Your new version seems OK too.

The words 'down again' seem to me a bit redundant.
