Definition of contain, dont understand

I know contain means to hold in a volume or area.
But how does it work in this example " the list contains the groceries".....there are no physical groceries CONTAINED there, only listed, so what is it that they mean or how is this word being used? Do they mean the groceries are included/expressed?

I am just confused, please help, thankyou

I agree that 'includes' is a much better word here.

SO are you saying in that context, when someone refers to contain as in " My ideas are contained within the book" or "the groceries are contained on the list", what they are really saying is that these things are embodied, included, (in more a generic sense), not physically?

I see one definition of contain means to include, involve, embody or have as content, which makes the most sense.
