Definition of adjective

Hello teachers

What does modification of something by another thing mean in English grammar? For example, when we talk about the function of adjectives in English, we say that an adjective is that element of a sentence which modifies or describes a noun or a pronoun. Does "modify", here, mean to change the meaning of a noun or pronoun? How should I explain to others what the function or use of an adjective in a sentence is?

It doesn't so much change the meaning of the noun as give us more information about the noun. For example, a "red book" is still a book, but "red" tells us something extra about it. )

(There may be some examples where the meaning is changed due to "adj + noun" being a special idiomatic phrase, or something like that, but these are special cases.)
