Vocabulary

Definition of a word.

Hi, everyone. I hope you can help me to understand this word/expression: He grew up to become a famous footballer. What exactly it means "grow up to do something". I got it this way: He was meant to become a famous footballer, is this right? Could you say this otherwise, so that I could understand, it'd be very helpful. Hope it's not a silly question. Thank you all for your replies in advance.
