definite article with 'said'

By the time I hear about it, the outcome of (the) said events is already the source of furious debate.

The original sentence came from a book without 'the.' I often see no article before said being used in this way. Is it an alternative to including the article or is it the only grammatical option?

Thanks

In your example, I believe either would be technically correct. But the first form (without the "the"), being the most concise, would be the best to use.
