Definite article with abstract nouns

Is it acceptable to use the definite article in the following sentence? „“She cannot ignore the poverty on the outskirts of the big cities.“ I‘d have said something like „the degree of poverty“, but I‘d like to know whether the Version above is definetely wrong.
