Definite article, "the"

Is the following sentence right? Or, must I use "a/an" instead of "the" in the "there is ~" sentence form?

There is the apple in the basket.

Some told me I can use the definite article if the modified noun is already mentioned or known to listeners, but others just I can't because the definite article doesn't match the "there is/are ~" form.
