Definite article, indefinite article, or no article?

Hi, I have a question on the use of articles.

When you write about something general (as opposed to concrete instances), what would be the appropriate use (or no use) of articles? For example, when you like to compare the use of exams or essays as a means of grading, do you write,

1. Essay is better than exam, because...
2. Essays are better than exams, because...
3. An essay is better than an exam, because...
or
4.The essay is better than the exam, because...?

Thanks in advance.
