Definite article

Hi everyone!

Do I need a definite article in this type of sentences:

At the end of October 2017, the first experiment was launched.

This is a general sentence, without really saying anything about this first experiment. This sentence goes prior to the description of other things that were accomplished in 2017.

I think it's not needed. What do native speakers think? Does the article sound weird to your ear?

Thanks

Can't edit the post for some reason. I mean this sentence is written after the description of other accomplishments.

There are two definite articles, and they are both necessary.
