definite and indefinite articles before ordinal

(1) The song was released as a third single from this album.
(2) The song was released as the third single from this album.

Are both of these possible?
If so, what's the difference in meaning?
A general rule says that "the" should come before an ordinal number like "third". Is that rule still applicable here?
