Definite and indefinite article with 'train'

Hi,

Consider this conversation:

Person A: I've been to France a few years ago, and then one time during my stay I decided to hitchhike to Italy.
Person B: Why didn't you take 'the' train instead?

Now my question is, is it correct to say ''the train'' or should it be ''a train'' or are both correct?

Thanks

Hi I think you would use "the" if you know that there is a transport service that goes regularly from one place to the other; and you would use "a" if you are not sure - The quickest way from Manchester to London is the train - I have no idea how to get from Lyon to Florence - I expect I can get a train Dave
