1.I wrote my essay on a photo which was taken by Robert Capa.
The use of the article 'a' before the noun 'photo' is not clear to me because the sentence has a defining relative clause which define the noun 'photo' , so we should use the definite article 'the' instead of 'a'.
Could anyone explain the reason of it?

You would say I wrote my essay on the photo taken by Capa if you were referring to one specific photo taken by Capa and the person you were talking to knew which photo that was (maybe because you had just been talking about that photo recently).
