Define a sentence
I am having a problem defining a sentence. Is a sentence a group of words that names a thing? This must be wrong. Nouns name things, verbs name actions etc..... So is a sentence a group of words together creating a meaningful understanding of "what is going on" and/ or information about the world? Would this be a good way to expaling it?
I get confused becuase some defintions seem to explain a sentence as telling us something, but maybe I am taking that too literally and am getting confused. When I hear that then I think " oh, it tells something, so it must be naming a thing like a noun". Please help

"That man that I told you about" is a group of words that name that person. "The small town in New York that I grew up in that was only 45 miles from New York City but felt like it was as rural as the most remote outpost in Siberia" is all one giant noun phrase, naming that town.
