Hello! I'd say that "other" means "different" (Susan was the only one dressed in red; all the other persons wore black) but "another" means "one more" (Mmm! Your cake is delicious!

Here is an additional tip. If you have two books, you can say "this book and the other book". If you have three books, you can say either "this book and the other (two) books" or "this book, another book, and the other book".
