Defer

I was not mature enough to enter the first grade when I was 6. Would it be appropriate to say:

My starting of school was pushed back a year.

or

My starting of school was deferred by a year. (My start of school was deferred by a year.)?

Perhaps you'll come up with a different way of saying that.

I would naturally say 'I started school one year late.'
