Defend

0 to defend or to make a defense i presume is to make an argument against the opponent's allegation. but do you think it can be used in such way as shown below: 02br

00the defendant defended that he's never been to the victims house on that evening so he shall not be suspected. 02br

00i searched on the net only to find that mainly Chinese websites employ the word in this way (it corresponds to the Chinese word for word translation.) so i wonder whether it is a bad expression or how a native speaker may say. 0-

00"The defendant defended" doesn't sound right at all. What's more, defend calls for a noun (defend somebody, defend the freedom of speech etc). The right thing to say is "the defendant maintained/claimed that...". 0-
