He thought he'd opened the scoring, but his first goal was deflected off Mike Pollitt, meaning the unfortunate Wigan keeper was responsible.

i looked up the word deflected off in dictionary and it means to change direction..........but i don't underestand the meaning of it in the sentence can you explain please?

At first he had thought he hit the goal directly, but then realized that it had deflected off Mike. Since Mike was the last to be in contact with the projectile, he gets credit for the goal.
