Deepen one's roots

Hey there!

I am translating something to English, and there's a phrase that I'm not sure works in English.

Can I say that a certain new group of people in a certain community is trying to deepen its roots?

for exemple:

"The immigrants are trying to deepen their roots in the country."

Does that make sense, meaning they are trying to establish themselves in the new place?

Thank you!
