Vocabulary

deep

The topic is a cross-country championship race.

"The women's field is incredibly deep and they did a good job."

What does this "deep" mean?
I couldn't find any fitting entry in dictionaries, though it seems to mean difficult to foresee the winner or how the race will go. Is that correct?
