Deem: active or only passive voice?

I know that one can use the verb "to deem" in the active voice, but I know it is not very usual. My question is if it doesn't sound strange to employ in a paper where one uses formal English. For instance: "He seeks what he deems to be good".

Thanks,

Hello Sextus I think it's fine in a formal context; though it can make a text seem a little stiff, if used often. MrP
