Deck or the deck

Hello everyone,

Is the word "deck" correctly used without the definite article "the" in the following sentence?

- Again and again he was sent below deck because he didn't work properly.

Or must "the" be added?as follow:

- Again and again he was sent below the deck because he didn't work properly.
