Recent technological developments have enable us to gain free access to copyrighted music and books from the Internet. While it is illegal do so, there are undoubtedly some advantages to this current situation.

First of all, free download of copyrighted entertainment such as music, films or books can deliver many individual and social benefits. Personally, many of us can find it easier to enjoy such products on a regular basis, especially those who can’t afford them. Although this is against the law, it does undeniably raises the living standards around the world by allowing greater access to entertainment. On the other hand, creators like artists or novelists can also profit from the issues. Their products can be promoted and received from the wider public and as a result, they are more likely to be famous. Thus, this can lay the foundation for further developments in their own careers.

However, the current issue can have many unforeseen and adverse consequences on a social level. One reason is that it can create a certain degree of unfairness between the public and the makers of the products. Illegal downloads of music or books can lead to financial difficulties of artists and authors because they are not rightly paid for their creative labour. Consequently, this can hinder their professional careers. In addition, further illegal actions can occur from the situation. For example, some people might download other’s works and sell them to other sources at a cheaper price. Notwithstanding, I believe these drawbacks would be lessened in view of the advantages of this issue. Artists and authors still receive their main income in other ways while many other illegal activities don’t last long to have a profound effect on the society.

In conclusion, free downloads and access to copyrighted entertainment like music or books are mainly positive because they can raise living standards and even help artists and authors in their careers. While it is illegal, I believe the potential harm the issue poses is negligible.
