Dear teachers, my name is Sylvia and I need your help with checking my IELTS essay. Thank you so much!

Topic: In most countries, fast food is becoming cheaper and more available. Do you think the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

In recent years, convenience food has gained in popularity among many countries. Besides, the mass production of food also allows fast-food chains to sell their products at increasingly competitive prices. In my opinion, these trends may result in more negative consequences than benefits.

The prevalence of junk food might have some beneficial implications for the development of the society. From businesses’ point of view, selling convenience food has proved commercially lucrative for many big names like MC Donald, KFC and Burger King. These fast-food outlets, as well as many others, have enjoyed periods of sales growth by offering discounted burgers, French fries and chicken nuggets to millions of customers. Aside from that, the increased availability of convenience food means the low-income population and citizens from deprived neighborhoods can afford more food to sustain their living. Hence, thousands of people would no longer suffer from extreme poverty if they could gain more access to ready meals.

However, there are a host of problems regarding the manufacture and consumption of fast-food worth taken into account. Firstly, overindulgence in food and drink that are high in fat and calories can lead to several acute health problems. Take America for example, this country often ranks high in the number of people suffering from obesity, diabetes and many other diseases related to excess consumption of fast-food. Secondly, humans are squandering more sources and materials on packaging and storing food, which could put a strain on the environment. The uses of chemical preservatives and plastic packages have resulted in the deteriorated quality of air, soil, water and posed a threat to the survival of countless of species on Earth, including humankind.

In conclusion, it is true that the society has benefited from selling and buying convenience food in some ways, I would argue that these minor advantages would be eclipsed by the many downsides.
