Apart from being a conusmmate jazz pianist, criss-crossing the world and performing with Leionel Hampton, Elvin Jones, Stan Getz and many other luminaries, Leonid Vintskevich has always been interested in the traditional russian music of the Kursk region, the birthplace of Leonid. Ever since he heard the authenitc singing of an elderly singing group in the Russian middle-of-nowhere he had wanted to create something that would reflect the inherent improvisation of the russian folk music. In 1999, as a part of the "Jazz Province" musical festival , Leonid and Nikolai Vinkevici presented the original program called "Russian ornament", created in collaboration with one of the leading folklore ensembles "Rostan" headed by Valentina Savenko. Since then they have performed at the best venues all over Russia, winning critical acclaim and recognition. In 2007, the outstanding American musicians - the drummer Joel Taylor and bassist Kip Reed joined the band, giving a new impetus for the preservation of the unique folklore palette. a. In 2013 the album "Russian Ornament" was released, fusing traditional jazz arsenal with the hitherto little-known among jazz fans folk instruments dating back from the 17th century. The band, having synthesised the folk songs of the Black soil region with the modern jazz forms and having performed with the likes of Jay Ashby, Mike Miller, Bill Champlin, Kim Nazarian, Larry Goldings, can without exaggeration be called unique, its albums selling on both sides of the atlantic and the prestigious Miles Davis award under its belt. The bands compositonas have long been a mainstay of high-quality radio stations all over the world. So far seven albums have been released, selling on the both sides of the Atlantic. During the past two years the band's sax player Nick Vintskevich has won most prestigious awards twice - the Miles Davis award in 2017, being the only Russian musician to have done so, and the best composer award in the "Made in New York" international contest. The new album is soon to be released, with Mike Miller and Bill Summers on board. It would be logical to assume that as versatile a band as this has many ideas in stock, ready to change our notions of jazz and music in general, long-entrenhced and familiar though they may be.
