Dead or Death?

"The number of confirmed dead now stands at 2-hundred-75 people."

I have used the word dead as an adjective or the dead but I have seen dead is used as a noun but death is the noun of dead, isn't it? And then should it be "The number of confirmed death now stands at 2-hundred-75 people", isn't it? What do you native English speakers think? Thank you so much as usual.

In your sentence, "dead" is a noun meaning "dead people". In "the number confirmed dead" (= "the number of people who are / have been confirmed dead") it would be an adjective. If you use the word "death" it would have to be "the number of confirmed death s ".

  • In your sentence, "dead" is a noun meaning "dead people".
  • In "the number confirmed dead" (= "the number of people who are / have been confirmed dead") it would be an adjective.
  • If you use the word "death" it would have to be "the number of confirmed death s ".
  • "2-hundred-75" looks a bit odd to me.
  • However, this a US-style, so I don't feel fully qualified to comment.

First, I think that '2-hundred-75' is most odd and quite unacceptable: 275.
Hans51The number of confirmed dead now stands at 275 people."
'Dead' is a pronoun there.
