Dead gun

Hello there ...

what is meant by the description of a person as a "dead gun" in old times, or in Western movies? Someone, who is a pretty good shooter?

Thanks so much for your help.

I've never heard this term. A "dead shot" would mean someone who shoots very accurately.

My guess is that it means you've killed with that gun/you've killed someone with a gun.

I am almost certain it means(in Western terms) someone who is no-good. Such as a thief, robber, rustler etc. However, I have lived in rural "cowboy" country my entire life(guns on our hips since 10, on a horse since 10 the whole American stereotype) and I have never heard the phrase. I hope I helped and did not just created more confusion.

"dead" is literal.

"gun" (also "gunman"): a man armed with a gun, especially a professional killer; a man noted for speed or skill in handling a gun; a man armed with or skilled in the use of a gun

Both are right. It means someone who is skilled with a gun and has killed, dead shot. If you are good with a gun and killed but weren't in the services or law you were most likely up to no good like a robber, etc.
