Deaccession

I've been doing research on a museum and I keep encountering the word "deaccession" as a verb and a noun. Far as I can tell, it's just a euphemistic way of saying "sale" or "sell" - or is there more to the process than this?

[nq:1]I've been doing research on a museum and I keep encountering the word "deaccession" as a verb and a noun. [/nq] From the museum people I know, it means to remove from the collection, regardless of whether that involves selling, giving to someone else, or even throwing it in the trash. There are various issues and procedures that need to be gone through in order to decide how much to get rid of, which items specifically, how to remove them from the records, etc.
