More context please. The obvious answer is to write the month and the year, e.g. "March 2020", but I suppose that is not what you are looking for.

It depends. Here is an example:

"Josh returned from Kuwait on December 17, 2011, and immediately set about rebuilding his former life."

If you use slash notation, the date will be ambiguous, since the UK and US differ on that. If you include the year, as I have done, you must put a comma after the year as a matter of form—the year is considered parenthetical. Without the year, no comma, of course, unless it is required for some other reason:

"Josh returned from Kuwait on December 17 and immediately set about rebuilding his former life."

You can spell out the day number, and you should in fiction if you can because it is an ordinal number, and the "th" in "17th" is clunky:

"Josh returned from Kuwait on the seventeenth of December and immediately set about rebuilding his former life."
