Day after day the facts were pounded home to them

pound (verb)
2 c : to inculcate by insistent repetition : drive <day after day the facts were pounded home to them - Ivy B. Priest>
[M-W's Col. Dic.]

In Priest's quoted sentence "pounded" seems more close in meaning to 'sent' and not to as described in the definition. Do you see it the same way. e.g. All the mathematics formulae were pounded into students memory after three hours of vigorous hard work.

Hello Jackson6612 In Priest's quoted sentence "pounded" seems more close in meaning to 'sent' and not to as described in the definition I think "pound" emphasises the "insistent repetition". He does say that these facts were repeated "day after day". In the second sentence there is not such a great sense of repetition with "three hours of vigorous hard work".

  • Certainly pound is it not wrong here and in itself gives the suggestion of forceful repetition.
  • For me using "send something home" is more for one shocking event that engraves something on the memory.
