I'm a tad confused about the word "Dating" and what it exactly means. Does it mean to go out with someone to get to know them or it could be also used when two people are together already?

Just to clear this up, If I went out with my girl friend to have a coffee or eat something, she wouldn't say she was on a date with me, right?
