Dated VS out-of-date

Hi,

Consider this ex.:

That dress looks a bit dated now

I wonder if dated ( in this and similar context) sounds "old-fashioned" to AmEng speakers.

I had to ask this question because my Longman dictionary claims the atribute dated is "old-fashioned" :-) Perhaps it is but only for BrEng speakers?
