date back to/trace back to

Along the way, travelers enjoy driving through the state's famous covered bridges, many of which date back to the 1830s. The area can be seen by car, bike, canoe, kayak or on foot.

For me, the meaning of date back to and trace back to is almost the same, but I think my gut feeling is wrong. Are they the same? Thanks.
