Data Cell

We're writing a manual about a piece of equipment that uses a touch screen to control some of the functions. When refering to the touch screen, we are debating whether to use the word(s) button, icon or data cell to describe an area on the screen that you touch to make the machine perform a function or to enter a control parameter.

Which word is most descriptive and which one would you use in describing these areas on the screen.

" That sounds like something in an Excel spreadsheet. My thought: If it looks like a button (the touch screen icon has the 3-D appearance), then call it a button. If it's flat-looking thing, then call it an icon.

Without a doubt, I would NOT use "data cell." That sounds like something in an Excel spreadsheet.

My thought: If it looks like a button (the touch screen icon has the 3-D appearance), then call it a button. If it's flat-looking thing, then call it an icon.

I'd rather call buttons things which should be touched upon or clicked on in order to activate something.
