Dash in between abbreviated letters

If I happen to break an abbreviation at the end of a sentence,
should I just add the dash like I'm supposed to with every other word?

Top answer

Words are divided into syllables, and a line break comes at the end of a syllable. What abbreviation are you talking about? Most do not have syllables, but I suppose it depends on the particular abbreviation.

Possibly you mean hyphen rather than dash.

Oh sorry, but I meant ACRONYMS:)
If acronyms happen to occur at the very end of a sentence should I just split it up with a dash like I

Do you mean a line?
Most acronyms are short. Do not split them into parts.

OK: He had a great career at
NASA.

Not OK: He had a great career at NA-
SA.

No, I definitely do know the difference between the two, sorry to break it to you:)

If (as AS suggested) you mean line not sentence, and if you are talk-
ing about break-
ing words like this, then that is a hyphen not a dash.

But if this appears on a formal document or, say, a book, it will create a pretty harsh and abrupt blank at the end the sentence

I've never ever seen hyphens being used to break up a sentence like that.
Is it a special case, GPY?:)

I don't think we have answered your question, nor completely cleared the terminology you used:

1. Not "abbreviation" but acronym. You confirmed that you were asking about acronyms.
2. Hyphen or dash. You did
