Could you please explain this sentence to me? I understand that silence and sound are opposite of each other but not darkness and space...

Darkness is to space what silence is to sound.

I take it to mean the stars are as a symphony. The key being the interval. Silence are the rests in music and darkness is the rest in a sky full of stars.
