Dared + verb vs dared + to + verb?

Dear Users,

Which of the two is correct?

He never dared explore the catacombs beneath the castle.

He never dared to explore the catacombs beneath the castle.

As far as I know, dare is followed by a verb without to.

P.S. Aside from the level of formality, is there a difference between beneath and under?
