Dante Alighieri

Hi,

My longman gives two pronounciation patterns for Dante.

The first pattern is ['danti] .....Very close to 'candy' (meaning the vowel sounds)? And probably very close to the native Italian pronunciation?

The second one, which is marked AmEng, is ['da:ntei] {*}.
There must be a rational explanation to pronouncing 'Dante' in this (a little unusual?) way?

It would be great if you could give me a couple more examples of proper names that are pronounced "noticeably differently" in AmEng and BrEng?

thanks!

I'm surprised nobody else has contributed names for this thread. I'm sure there are lots more.

This will bump it to the top to remind people about it.
