Dance With My Father by Luther Vandross

Could I ask one question?

What does "to get my way" mean?

Thank you in advance.

Part of its lyrics is below:

Back when I was a child
Before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high
And dance with my mother and me and then

Spin me around till I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure
I was loved

If I could get another chance
Another walk, another dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
How I’d love, love, love to dance with my father again

Ooh, ooh

When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way I would run from her to him
He’d make me laugh just to comfort me, yeah, yeah
Then finally make me do just what my mama said

To "get my way" means that the result that I want happens when I want one result but somebody else wants a different result. In the song he talks about a disagreement with his mother -- so he and his mother each want something different. He would run to his father in hopes that his father would allow the outcome that he (Luther) wanted but that his mother did not want -- if his father allowed that, the father allowing it would be Luther getting his way.

  • I like how this ends in the song -- the father makes Luther feel better, but he still does not get his way.
  • The mother's wisodom is upheld but the child is still allowed to feel good without getting his way.

Here, "to get my way " means "to get what I wanted".

When he would disagree with his Mother, in order to get what he wanted he'd run to his Father who would make him laugh and finally make him do what his mother wanted.

It's a nice song by a nice guy. Luther Vandross was truly liked by a whole bunch of people that still miss him to this day.
