dance in time

Hallo,

What is the meaning of the word 'and' in the following sentence?

Try and dance in time to the music.

Does it really mean 'and' or 'to'? I think it means 'try to dance and try to dance in time to the music' rather than 'try and don't you dare to dance out of time to the music'. Is it right what I think?

It could mean either, and the use of "and" has nothing to do with whether it is a genuine suggestion or a dare! " It's really the context that would determine whether it is a dare or a suggestion to attempt something. Note also the alternative structure, try + v-ing.

"Try and" is just a more informal way of saying "try to."
