the following text is said by someone who goes inside the fire to rescue his chess-player friend. Does the highlighted section mean "worse than everything that when I reached him he was saying his last word which was nothing but "check""?

Context:

The fire had already reached it... there was nothing I could do. Damndest thing, though... it got the last word. "Check".

oh, I forgot to change "it" in the context to "he"! how about if it's like:

The fire had already reached him... there was nothing I could do. Damndest thing, though... he got the last word. "Check".
