A sentence from the famous novel, 'Da Vinci Code'

"She had failed him in forgiveness."

Does the sentence mean that, (1) she had failed him expecting forgiveness?

Or (2) she had failed him but she was forgiven?

I don't recall the line and need more context to be sure (perhaps others on this forum have read it more recently and can provide a better answer), but I would say that he wanted or needed her to forgive him, but she did not.

Now I see that Clive's explanation, "It sounds to me like she had failed him in the area of forgiveness, ie had not shown the forgiveness that he expected from her" sounds very reasonable!!!
