Cynic

'Cynic' means one who sracastically doubts the merit or sincerity of another human being

Now recently I was watching the news and the person was asked if cocaine should be legalized and the person answered 'I think it should be becuase it will cut off the crimes that are associated with the drug trafficing industry, but the cynic in me knows that in politics no one wants to touch this sensitive 'moral-based' issue with a ten foot pole.'

What does cynic mean in the above context and did the person use it correctly?

Cynic is not nesessary a person who doubts any good trait in another person; he doubts and even demonstrates his/her disdain for one's ethical and/or social values, for they presumably impede achieveing some practical result. So the man seems to have an inner cynic if he is ready to avoid touching 'moral' issues like certain stinky stuff
