Thanks, LouiseT.
But when these two words are both refered to reference books in a group concept, do they mean the same thing? Are they interchangeable?

Hi,

When these two words are both refered to 'reference books' in a group concept, do they mean the same thing? Are they interchangeable?

I have had a look at other references on the internet and certainly in some dictionaries the words are synonymous. One reference gave cyclopaedia to be an abbreviation of encyclopaedia and another states that Cyclopaedia was an early example of an encyclopaedia.

I would always use encyclopaedia.
